The "Saint" who was never an (official) Latter-Day Saint

I've been studying the life of Mother Teresa lately, and am blown away by how Christlike she was.

In the book Come Be My Light, we learn that throughout the course of her ministry, Mother Teresa suffered spiritual dry spells, times when she didn't detect God's love or companionship. Month after month, and in some stretches year after year, Mother Teresa became increasingly despondent because of God's silence. Although she desperately sought even a mere whisper from him, her wait was in vain. Despite his silence, Mother Teresa remained devoted. "Even though I don't feel his presence," she wrote, "I will seek to love him as he has never been loved."

(I love that last part: "I will seek to love him as he has never been loved.")

Below are some more quotes from this truly remarkable woman, who (although not yet canonized a saint by the Roman Catholic church), I personally have no problem whatsoever calling a "Saint".

To you who are reading this, I have a question: Which quote (below) hit you just the right way, and why?

"I have found the paradox: that if you love until it hurts, there can be no more hurt, only more love."

"If we have no peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other."

"Let us always meet each other with smile, for the smile is the beginning of love."

"We need to find God, and he cannot be found in noise and restlessness. God is the friend of silence. See how nature - trees, flowers, grass- grows in silence; see the stars, the moon and the sun, how they move in silence... We need silence to be able to touch souls."

"We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing drop."

"Words which do not give the light of Christ increase the darkness."

"We shall never know all the good that a simple smile can do."

"There is always the danger that we may just do the work for the sake of the work. This is where the respect and the love and the devotion come in - that we do it to God, to Christ, and that's why we try to do it as beautifully as possible."

"If you judge people, you have no time to love them."

"People are often unreasonable and self-centered. Forgive them anyway."

"If you are kind, people may accuse you of ulterior motives. Be kind anyway."

"If you are honest, people may cheat you. Be honest anyway."

"If you find happiness, people may be jealous. Be happy anyway."

"The good you do today may be forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway."

"Give the world the best you have and it may never be enough. Give your best anyway."

"For you see, in the end, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway."

"I know God won't give me anything I can't handle. I just wish he didn't trust me so much."

"I am not sure exactly what heaven will be like, but I know that when we die and it comes time for God to judge us, he will not ask, 'How many good things have you done in your life?' rather he will ask, 'How much love did you put into what you did?"

"Everytime you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing."

"If you are humble nothing will touch you, neither praise nor disgrace, because you know what you are."

"Reach high, for stars lie hidden in your soul. Dream deep, for every dream precedes the goal."

"Prayer is not asking. Prayer is putting oneself in the hands of God, at His disposition, and listening to His voice in the depth of our hearts."

"A life not lived for others is not a life."

  1. "Prayer is not asking. Prayer is putting oneself in the hands of God, at His disposition, and listening to His voice in the depth of our hearts." I loved ALL of the things you quoted Mother Teresa as saying, but this one, of late, has the most significance. It also falls in line with having your CEMS. I personally have a hard time getting my mind and heart around the 'big picture' of your CEMS, but I can take it little bites at a time. And this quote about prayer is putting oneself in the hands of God is a wonderful bite I want to chew on!

  2. "Words which do not give the light of Christ increase the darkness."

This is the one that spoke the most to me. There were several others but this one because words can be used to hurt or heal. When we use words of love and kindness then we truly do spread light to others and it will be reflected in the world around us. In a small way I believe it is a way to testify of Christ and bring others closer to Him.

The topic of humility is something that I have been pondering lately. I've been trying to figure out what it means for me to feel humble. I've had a hard time trying to be humble in a Godly sense, at least in a way that I can detect as from God. I have come to realize that 'being humble' is at least in part misunderstood. There are often other emotions accompanying it that I had been mistaking for actual humility. But this quote has given me the key I had been looking for. When we are truly humble, there is nothing in the way that would stop Heavenly Father from adding to us what He wants to add to us. And it doesn't hurt at all. If something hurts, then there is still something in the way stopping me from receiving God's love fully. However, if I have overwhelming thankfulness in me, that is the sign for me that nothing is in the way and I have received what God wanted me to have. This is in direct opposition to humiliation. God never humiliates - only men can do this to another.

  4. "A life not lived for others is not a life." I think that all of the quotes were exceptional and Mother Teresa is certainly one of the most amazing persons of all time. I like this quote because it seems to me that service is the essence of a celestial person, someone with eternal life. The things that Heavenly Father and Mother do and the things that Jesus does are all for us. We must learn to not only consecrate our "stuff" but who we are and what we are about. We must become pure so that the things we do are to love and lift others and to glorify our God.

  5. I feel that these 'spiritual dry spells' are the training ground for us to become leaders. This is done with great love in our spiritual development so we can know our true relationship with God and self. Trusting in ourselves is an important part of true Divine Trust.

  6. I love the quotes on the power of smiling. It’s ibteresting because yesterday I was bustling through a parking lot with my two young kids. A man drove by and smiled at me. It startled me and brightened my day. I want to smile at people more. It gives off light and love.
